Accessibility Situated in the heart of Bohai Sea Economic Ring, Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) lies at the crossroads of major traffic links within the country. It is easily accessible by Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Highway from Beijing (130 kilometers) and Tianjin (40 kilometers). It takes one hour and a half to drive from Beijing to TEDA if one uses this highway. The bullet-shaped high-speed locomotive train, which is currently commuting between Beijing and Tianjin, is the most advanced of its kind in China. TEDA is 180 kilometers (2 hours) away from Beijing Capital International Airport, 36 kilometers (45 minutes) from Tianjin International Airport and 4 kilometers (10 minutes) from Tianjin New Port. Substantially, TEDA is also easily accessible by 9 trunk railways and 10 trunk roads and highways from the inner parts of China, including Highways of Shanhaiguan Pass-Guangzhou and Beijing-Fuzhou, both of which are quite close to TEDA. A metropolis at the eastern tip of Eurasia, Tianjin is also served by many highways. In short, easy accessibility gives TEDA equally easy access to the major markets of the country.

Form the perspective of the distances from various infrastructures to TEDA, Tianjin New Port, the closest port, is 5 kilometers (6 minutes) away by railway and 2 kilometers away (6 minutes) by road. Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Highway, the closest road, is immediately adjacent to TEDA. Tianjin International Airport, the closest airport, is 38 kilometers (30 minutes) away. Tianjin Railway Station, the closest of all railway stations, is 50 kilometers (42 minutes) away. Tianjin Development Zone Customs is the closest customs.

Tianjin New Port Located 3 kilometers away from TEDA, Tianjin New Port is the biggest cargo port in the northern part of China. Annually, it can handle over 100 million tons of cargo in 2 million standardized containers, and that annual throughput in terms of the number of containers is expected to be up to 5 million by the year 2010. Served by sea links of over 300 ports in 160 countries of the world, the port is a dominant import and export channel for the northeastern and northern parts of the country.

Logistics and Customs Services The Customs of TEDA is executing official customs transfer agreements with Tianjin Airport Customs and Beijing Airport Customs. According to the agreements, air cargo can be directly cleared within TEDA: imported items can be directly transported into TEDA and get cleared, while exported items, after being binned and cleared within the TEDA, can be directly put onboard aircraft. For companies that have a lot of import and export businesses, TEDA can consider providing "Green Channel" services to facilitate their customs clearances.

In August of 2001, the major departments of Tianjin Customs physically moved their services into TEDA in order to make it easier for companies to get customs clearances.

Land Resources: The city of Tianjin has a total land area of approximately 1.2 million hectares, including cultivated lands of half a million hectares (42%), parks of 33,000 hectares (2.75%), forest lands of 21,000 hectares (1.76%), pastures of 670 hectares (0.06%), residential houses and industrial facilities of 210,000 hectares (17.6%), roads of 33,000 hectares (2.74%), water catchments of 320,000 hectares (26.49%), and unutilized lands of 80,000 hectares (7.03%). In addition, the wastelands and shoals of over 120 square kilometers in the coastal regions are ideal for projects of petrochemical and marine chemical industries.

Mineral Resources: Tianjin possesses proven reserves of over 30 kinds of metallic minerals, nonmetallic minerals, geothermal energy and fuels. Metallic minerals mainly include manganese, tungsten, molybdenum, copper, zinc, iron, etc. Nonmetallic minerals mainly include limestone, barite, stromatolite, marble, etc. The proven reserve of petroleum is 450 million tons and that of natural gas is 14 billion cubic meters. Rich in geothermal energy, Tianjin now boasts 10 areas of geothermal anomaly. Their total hot water reserves of 110.36 billion cubic meters make them the biggest geothermal field ever discovered in China.

Maritime Resources: Tianjin abounds with maritime resources, mainly including sea salt, petroleum and fish. Here, Changlu Saltern, the biggest of its kind in China, produces salt of over 2 million tons each year. The seabed of Bohai has rich reserves of petroleum and natural gas. These reserves are extensions of the oil fields of Shengli, Dagang and Liaohe in the North China Basin. Bohai Oilfield, jointly run by China and Japan, now has a daily production of over 10 million tons. The long coastline gives Tianjin rich aquatic resources, including over 70 species of fish. Tianjin is located where Haihe River flows into Bohai Sea. The estuary area full of many water catchments is a home to over 60 kinds of freshwater fish.

Water Resources: The water resources in Tianjin include surface water and ground water. The diversion works, which was completed in 1983, introduces water from Panjiakou Reservoir into Tianjin, with a yearly water supply capacity of 1 billion cubic meters. The yearly ground water supply is 1.63 billion cubic meters.

Industrial Expertise

As one of China's most important economic centers and one of the four municipalities directly under the central government, Tianjin has a wide range of industries. TEDA companies can benefit a lot from the city's exceptional pool of capabilities and resources in terms of supplies, expertise, scientific research and development and professional talents.

Tianjin is the birthplace of China's modern industries and one of the country's major industrial bases. Industrial output accounts for over 50% of the city's total GNP. The city has over 10,000 enterprises in over 150 different industries. Major industries include electronics, automobile, metallurgy, machinery, chemistry, textile, medicine, etc, and a sound service system is available to support the healthy growth of these industries.

In the past over 10 years, TEDA has seen the booming development of four key industries:

    Electronics and Communications
    Food Industry
    Bio-Pharmaceuticals
    Machinery Manufacturing

Behind all this are such multinational giants as Motorola, Samsung, GE, Nestle, SEW, Novonordisk, etc.

Tianjin now boasts 161 independent scientific research institutes. Nearly 80% of the state-run large and medium sized enterprises have their own R&D functions. Over 3000 private research institutes are now operating. Tianjin's over 20 universities and colleges such as Tianjin University and Nankai University house some of the country's most important and advanced scientific research bases, including 6 state-class laboratories, 27 technical evaluation centers and 21 scientific and technological information centers. The city's newly built Science and Technology Hall, Natural Museum and Teenagers Scientific and Technological Activities Center all provide excellent opportunities for people to develop their interest in general science. The city government has been increasing its budgets on projects of research and development in the past few years. Hundreds of high-tech projects designed to boost the growth of high-tech industries have been implemented. A telling evidence of that is the birth of the state-class area of new technologies and industries. Now, the project of turning Tianjin into an "information port" has been already initiated.
Tianjin has over 600,000 professionals in all disciplines, including over 300,000 natural scientists and 170,000 academicians of China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering.

E-TEDA

TEDA has 4 fibre-optical loops with a total length of 40 kilometers. Speed of the trunk line is 2G. The major communication services include PSTN, ISDN, IN, IP, DNN< FR and X.25. To promote E-business and E-administration in TEDA, TEDA is building a domestically advanced urban wideband digital network which makes all categories of wideband applications possible. TEDA will build a high-speed wideband network to promote the fusion of communications, television and computer. This represents an effort to further improve TEDA’s public communication network and solidify the information safety so that TEDA’s information industry can grow by leaps and bounds.

---- ISDN and IP services are available in TEDA. In 1998, Motorola’s 5-hour uninterrupted television conference was quite successful. The conference was made possible by connecting three 2B+D ISDN dedicated lines with Motorola’s business units around the globe. This was also the first time that such a conference was held in China.

  • The DDN dedicated lines of 8M provided by the State Communications Bureau is the most advanced. In 2000, Motorola rented a wideband dedicated line of 6M.

  • The “TEDA Urban Wideband Network Project” was kicked off in October of 2000. It can provide 1-10M wideband services to household subscribers, and 10-100M wideband services to non-household subscribers.

TEDA has fibre optical lines of 30,500 chip•kilometers, and communication tubes of 3,460 hole•kilometer. The Internet outlet wideband is 40.62G,and the speed of the trunk line is 43G. A total of 11,700 households and 3,270 enterprises are connected to the wideband network. The telephone switchboard capacity is 135,000 telephones, and the capacity for the stored program controlled switching system is 185,500 telephones. There are 61,000 telephone subscribers, including 23,400 household subscribers.
