Scoot, the low-cost unit of Singapore Airlines, will launch flights between Singapore and China's northern coastal city of Tianjin on Thursday, the company said on Wednesday.
Â
The inaugural flight will take off at 1:30 a.m. local time from the Terminal 2 at Singapore's Changi Airport and arrive at Tianjin airport six hours later. The flight will be operated three times a week at first and four times a week starting from Sept. 9, Scoot said.
Â
Tianjin will be Scoot's first destination on the Chinese mainland. Campbell Wilson, chief executive officer of the budget carrier, said Tianjin is a "large and exciting city."
Â
The company will launch flights to more destinations on the Chinese mainland, an important growth market for civil aviation, he said.
Â
Scoot was established by Singapore Airlines last year as a wholly-owned subsidiary that targets mainly the medium and long- haul markets. Singapore Airlines has stakes in Tiger Airways, a low-cost carrier comprising two units in Singapore and Australia.
Â
The low-cost carrier market in Asia Pacific has been growing fast. Currently about one in five passengers passing through Singapore's Changi Airport is traveling on a budget flight.
