Volkswagen will break ground on a new plant to make its dual-shift gearbox in Tianjin on Aug 31, said officials at the Tianjin Economic Development Area.
Â
With a total investment of 927 million euros ($1.16 billion), the plant will be built in two phases that each have a capacity of 450,000 units. Production is scheduled to begin in April 2014, with the second phase operational the following October.
Â
The plant is likely to make transmissions for Volkswagen Group's high-end models, including Audis made in China and overseas.
Â
It will be Volkswagen's second transmission plant in China. Its first, in Dalian, makes gearboxes for FAW Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen.
