010A ten-year-old boy in Tianjin claimed he found several fossils at a water park and experts concluded the stones are rare 400-million-year-old fossils of ancient animals.

Zou Mingjun is the ten-year-old paleontologist in Tianjin and he was playing with his brother by the lake when he noticed the oddly shaped things imbedded in the stones. He was sure the stones must be fossils and took pictures of them.

These stones are used to decorate the park along the lake, ranging in size from about one to two meters.

Kuang Xuewen, associate director of the Tianjin Museum of Natural History, said these stones truly contain fossils and the ancient animals-like the modern inkfish and pearly nautilus-belong to the amphibole group of caphalopoda that lived in the Ordovician period, which was more than 400 million years ago.

011During the Ordovician period, some marine mollusks died and their bodies were deposited in the mud. With years of earth movement and compression of the mud, they gradually became fossils.

Zou owes his discovery of the fossils to the natural science knowledge he regularly seeks out on his own.

He has showed great interest in physical geography since he was very young and sought out knowledge through books and television programs.
