030Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor waves to the public after she won the election on Sunday that will make her Hong Kong's first female chief executive.

Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on Sunday was elected chief executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR), tasked with the difficult mission of healing the social divisions that have plagued Hong Kong since the Occupy Central movement in 2014.

"I shall do my utmost to uphold 'one country, two systems' and to guard our core values," Lam vowed in a press release after the election, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The Electoral Affairs Commission of Hong Kong declared around 13.20 pm that Lam had garnered 777 out of 1,163 valid votes, followed by Tsang Chun-wah with 365 and Woo Kwok-hing with 21. Lam will be Hong Kong's first female leader.

Lam said she will discuss the development of Hong Kong with various sectors, and this will involve applying new resources in education, tackling housing problems and introducing new financial and tax measures.

Lam said that she will give opportunities to young people, and her first priority will be to "heal the divide."

Lam will take her oath of office on July 1 and will become the region's fifth chief executive.

Lam, 59, became a civil servant in Hong Kong in 1980 after obtaining her Bachelor of Social Sciences Degree at the University of Hong Kong, according to people.cn.

She has served successively as director of the Social Welfare Department, permanent secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands, director of the Development Bureau and chief secretary for Administration from 2000 to January 2017.
