The 39-year-old Spaniard who tried to protect a woman from the London Bridge terrorists with his skateboard died when he was stabbed in the back, a post mortem has confirmed.

The British police were forced to issue a statement saying that the talented banker had not been killed by a stray police bullet amid speculation that this was the reason it had taken four days to confirm his death.

Ignacio died on June 3 when he confronted three of the terrorists who were attacking a woman during the London atrocity.

He tried to hit them with his skateboard but was stabbed himself.

The cause of death has been confirmed by the Spanish Ministry of Interior.

The Spanish Government has posthumously granted him the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, one of the highest distinctions of the State, for his courage in facing the jihadists.

Petitions have also been set up on change.org to get a street in Madrid named after him and his local council of Las Rozas intends to create a skate park in his honour and award him their own bravery medal.

Other campaigns have been started on change.org for further bravery medals, including a Royal recognition.

At the time of the attack, in which eight people died, Ignacio was returning from skating in a park with his friends when they saw the terrorist attack in the surroundings of Borough Market, next to the London Bridge.

His friends have confirmed he rushed to help her, using his skateboard to hit her assailants but was stabbed in the process.

He then fell to the floor, still clutching his skateboard.

Ignacio, who lived in London, worked as an analyst at HSBC and was a skateboarding fanatic.

He spoke four languages and was described as extremely gifted.

His friends say he acted with great bravery, without thought for his own safety.

They have also revealed this was not the first time he had intervened to save someone.

On another occasion, he had protected a woman who was also being abused by a man in the street.

His father has paid public tribute to two of Ignacio's friends, Guillermo and Javi who were with him on London Bridge and tried everything within their power to help and save both him and the woman under attack.
