053In a first, China has confirmed plans to build a bicycle-only expressway connecting a science city and a residential suburb near Beijing. This is among China's efforts to encourage wider use of bicycles for short distance commuting and counter air pollution.

The expressway will run just nine kilometers but connects Zhongguancun and the residential complex of Tiantongyuan, places where a large number of expatriates live and work. Intense smog which reaches choking levels during winter is the reason for a large number of foreign experts leaving the country and growing resentment among the local population.

050The two-lane road will be five to seven meters wide, and consist of surface road and flyovers with elevators. The new facility will be largely used by people who avail to the increasingly popular bike sharing service.

Run on the Uber car renting system, the new facility allows a user to pick up and leave behind a bycycle after use from almost all locations.

052Beijing is expected to have 600 kilometers of pedestrian and cycle lanes by the end of this year. Beijing plans to expand the facilities to 3,200 kilometers of pedestrian and cycle lanes by 2020.

The expressway will have supporting facilities, which include including lighting equipment, dustbin and vending machines selling tires, will be installed along the two-lane expressway.

051China is rediscovering its past system of bicycle transport after decades of motorised transport which had made bicycles less popular among the younger and middle aged people. Colorful rented bikes have suddenly become popular with Chinese cities filled with an additional of 2 million new bicycles provided by the renting companies.

The new business of bike renting through mobile phone apps has attracted nearly a dozen companies. The business has done so well that some of the major renting companies opening branches in London, Bangkok, Singapore and other foreign cities in recent months.
