Named after the shan-shui tradition of Chinese landscape painting, the title of the exhibition embodies the spirit of mountains 山 and water水 whilst 心xin (heart) points to a more personal and imaginative interpretation of landscape. 'Mindscape' is an English translation, bringing all these ideas altogether.
Edward Batey studied Art and Illustration at Loughborough and Southampton in the UK then trained as an Art teacher. After teaching in Bristol for eight years Edward moved to Tianjin in 2008 and recently completed a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Nottingham. Having trained in Illustration, his work has always had a strong narrative feel. Illustrating stories was the original impetus for drawing and as his reading tastes have always led towards the magical and fantastical, so the drawings have followed.
Madeline Churchill is an Artist and Teacher from the UK and has been living in Tianjin for the last three years. She studied at Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Fine Art and shortly afterwards was offered the opportunity of an Artist Residency at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. It was during this time that she discovered an interest in the principles of Chinese Painting and her work has been influenced by these ideas ever since. Before coming back to China, Madeline taught Art at Wellington College in the UK for eight years. She returned in 2014 as Head of Art at Wellington College International Tianjin.
Emma Qi spent her childhood growing up in the mountains of China’s Shanxi province. Later as a student, she came to Tianjin to study Fine Art and has been working at Wellington College International Tianjin for four years. Even though she lives in the hustle and bustle of the city, the mountains have followed her - they are never far away.
And so, landscape paintings do not just represent the views that people see - they also become an emotional expression and a metaphor for life.
