031Samsung's Phone Plant in Tianjin

Samsung Electronics will cease operations at one of its mobile phone manufacturing plants in China, the company said, as its sales in the world’s biggest smartphone market slumps amid rising competition from lower-cost local rivals.

The South Korean company has seen its share of the Chinese market shrink to 1 percent in the first quarter of this year, losing out to home-grown brands like Huawei, according to market research firm Counterpoint, which pegs Samsung’s share of the pie at about 15 percent at mid-2013.

033The factory, which currently employs about 2,600 people, is scheduled to be shut down by the end of this year.

Samsung, the world’s biggest smartphone maker, said it would offer compensation packages to the employees and also provide opportunities to transfer to other Samsung facilities.

032But Samsung will invest 2.4 billion U.S. dollars to build new battery and capacitor plants in Tianjin, according to local authorities.

The investment will be used to expand the power battery lines and set up a multi-layer ceramics capacitors (MLCC) factory for automotive electronics in the city, according to Tianjin Municipal government.

Samsung SDI, a storage battery maker, will invest 800 million U.S. dollars on the battery project which is expected to cover 100,000 square meters.

The battery will mainly be used on energy storage systems, electric cars and electric tools, according to the company.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics, an electronic component supplier, will build the MLCC factory that is expected to be completed in 2019 and start operation in 2020.
