TIANJIN, April 21 (Bernama) -- The Tianjin Municipal Government has moved in high gear in economic recovery owing to its early adoption of economic transfomation.

In the first quarter of 2010, Tianjin had achieved 18.1 per cent growth in GDP despite the global economic crisis.

"Tianjin is able to secure 20 per cent increase in actual foreign direct investments and 10 per cent increase in rural income compared with the same period last year," said its secretary Zhang Gaoli in a meeting media delegates from Japan, South Korea and Asean countries here Tuesday.

Twenty-two representatives from the mainstream media of the 13 countries are here to attend the 3rd 10+3 Media Cooperation Forum opening on Wednesday.

Zhang said Tianjin happened to be one of the local governments that entered into economic transformation much earlier to promote green technology, innovative projects and low carbon industry, thus enabling it to have a quick economic recovery.

"The global financial crisis had great impact on China, Japan, South Korea and Asean member countries, but through our cooperation, we were able to secure sustainable growth," he said.

Zhang said the world economy was still in the midst of slow recovery and "we are still facing many uncertainties and the media can play an important role in the process."

"The Chinese government feel public opinion from the media is important in promoting and bringing about changes in economic, culture and education," added the central committee member of the Chinese communist party.

Zhang also said this was the first time a developing country like China was hosting the world Expo.

He said the theme of this year's media cooperation forum is "Experience 2010 Shanghai Expo, Jointly Build an East Asian Family" is most timely and appropriate.

He hoped that through China's cooperation with the media from Japan, South Korea and Asean member countries, there would be more reports of the events during the five-month expo for people in the region to know more about the expo.
