A record number of coronavirus infections in Xinjiang has raised concerns that the country is facing yet another wave of the pandemic.
China’s National Health Commission on Tuesday announced 64 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, marking the country’s largest one-day increase since March. Of these, 57 were found in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang.
In the past two weeks, 280 cases have been confirmed across the country. The latest outbreak in China – where Covid-19 was first reported earlier this year – comes as countries in the region experience a resurgence in infections.
Since the end of March, when China first reported zero cases of local transmission, the new infections have faced high-profile lockdowns, contact tracing and testing. But several small clusters of cases continue to appear.
