Kaohsiung, June 4 - Kaohsiung is expected to launch direct air links with Qingdao and Tianjin in mid-June, which will help to boost tourism, a tourism industry representative said Friday.

Also, the number of flights between Taiwan and Mainland China will be almost tripled to 38 per week, according to Lin Fu-nan, leader of an alliance of tourism-related businesses in Taiwan.

Lin said the increase in the number of flights was agreed upon during cross-Taiwan Strait aviation talks last month in Taipei and is the result of lobbying efforts by the alliance.

At present, Kaohsiung International Airport maintains direct air link with other eight cities, Fuzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Xiamen. A total of 14 flights per week are provided.

Lin said an increase in the number of flights between Taiwan and mainland China will help encourage more mainland tourists to visit southern Taiwan and bring more tourism revenue to the region.
