TOKYO — Japan's Toyota Motor has told affiliates that it may have to halt production at a major assembly plant in China on Thursday due to a strike at a parts supplier, a report said.

The world's biggest automaker has said that its assembly plant in Tianjin may be forced to idle production lines due to a shortage of parts as a result of the strike action, the Asahi Shimbun said, quoting an unnamed Toyota source.

The supplier, which is in the same region as the Toyota plant and produces door parts for Toyota's small cars, reportedly stopped operations Tuesday, the newspaper said without naming the factory, adding that details were unknown.

A Toyota spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report when contacted by AFP and said the company was still investigating the situation.

Toyota's rival Honda has been hit by a series of strikes in China, part of a wave of labour unrest that has highlighted complaints about low pay and long hours for millions of migrant workers.
