Proview International Holdings announced on October 26 that its subsidiary company in Chinese mainland, Proview Technology, owns the trademark rights to the iPad in China and has asked Apple to stop using the name. Proview has asked Apple for 10 billion yuan in compensation for copyright infringement.

According to China Securities Journal, Proview's Taipei subsidiary in 2000 and 2001 registered the use of "iPad" trademark for electronic products in China and other parts of the world.

After Apple's iPad was launched, Apple purchased the trademark rights in Europe and other regions for 35,000 pounds from Proview Taipei. But the trademark rights in China are still owned by Proview Technology in Shenzhen.

Proview Technology has recently been plunged into a debt crisis, owing nearly 400 million yuan to eight banks including Bank of China, Minsheng Bank and Guangdong Development Bank.

H&J Vanguard, a majority shareholder in Proview Technology, has expressed that Proview Technology may require the State Administration for Industry and Commerce to seal up Apple's products and ask for compensation totaling 10 billion yuan, together with the eight banks.

In May, Apple sued Proview Technology, saying that the trademark transfer assignment with Proview International included the trademark rights to mainland China.
