Along Haihe River’s east bank, the tower-like chimney has been a geographic icon for some time. But now, this giant industrial monster will perish when the Tianjin No.1 thermal power plant shuts down.

Previously, the city-center factory was a symbol of industrial development. However, soot and sulfide emissions have polluted the area around it, with unpleasant odours and noise disturbing nearby residents. This year, the local government will implement a fundamental solution that converts equipment for industrial and central heating.

The No.1 thermal power plant has four generators with a total installed capacity of 212,000 kW (a single-machine capacity of less than 100,000 kW), which is heavily fuel-consuming and inefficient.

The new and efficient plant will be built in a suburban area, causing less pollution to the city centre. The whole conversion program consists of four steps: laying heating tunnels, designing electrical facilities, installing hot water and heating equipment, and assembling heating installations.

The first-stage project has already started in Hedong District, right by the main busy roads. The whole project will be finished on October 15, one month before the November 15, the heating day.

Heping, Hedong, Hexi and Hebei districts will be included in this project. It’s not just residents who will benefit from this conversion project - commercial tenants in these areas will also enjoy hot water and central heating in the forthcoming winters.
