Vestas is close to producing V100 2MW low-wind turbines in China after it has successfully produced the first batch of 49-metre blades in the country.

The V100 is a low wind-speed turbine. To meet the increasing demand for development of low-wind sites and in to support China’s "decentralised" wind-power integration to the grid, Vestas formally introduced the V100 2MW platform turbine in early 2011.

It has subsequently built Vestas’ largest integrated manufacturing complex in the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) one of the three locations where the V100 turbine is produced.

However, Vestas said the first batch of 49-metre blades produced in Tianjin will be shipped to South America.

Up until now, the 49-metre blades were produced in Denmark and US.

Jens Tommerup, President of Vestas China, said: "The successful production of the first 49-metre blades is another milestone in Vestas’ manufacturing complex in TEDA and affirms the technical competences level of our TEDA factory.

"More importantly, this allows us to deliver one of our newest technologies for low-wind sites to our Chinese customers more rapidly. We are well-prepared in Tianjin," said Jens Tommerup.

Tommerup added that other major components of the V100 2MW platform turbine would eventually be produced in Tianjin.

In the first quarter of 2011, the V100 and V112 turbine accounted for 25% of Vestas’ global order intake.
