The centerpiece of the hike is the Eastern Qing Tombs complex, which is located east of Beijing, in Hebei province. At one point point during the Qing Dynasty, an emperor’s son plotted to usurp him, and so from then on each successive emperor and members of his court were interred at an alternate location from the previous one. This site was selected for its auspicious fengshui features such as the mountains surrounding it and the river running through it. The Eastern Qing Tombs include those of famous figures from the Qing Dynasty such as Emperor Qianlong and Cixi, the Dowager Empress. Â
