A WELL known dim sum producer in north China's Tianjin City is hoping to win the trademark for its new English name, which is only slightly less ridiculous than the Chinese moniker for its pork-filled buns.

The Tianjin Goubuli Catering (Group), a 149-year-old snack producer, is not sure authorities will approve its application for a new trademark because they are not sure if the trademark has already been registered, the Tianjin Daily said today.

Goubuli – which means "dog doesn't like (it)" in Chinese – wants to adopt the English name Go Believe, as that sounds like its Mandarin name.

The group handed in an official application to the trademark office under the State Administration for Industry & Commerce yesterday, right after they found several Websites registered with domain names using the words "go" and "believe" in various combinations.

"It's still not known whether any other individual or group has applied to the office for the English name," Mi Aqian, an attorney with the Goubuli Group, told the newspaper. "It usually takes four to five months to know the final result."

The food firm has had legal problems with its name in the past. A company in Japan forestalled the Tianjin group, registering the Chinese-language trademark "Goubuli" in Japan 10 years ago.

The group finally bought back the trademark in June for a "very small transaction fee," according to Mi.

The deal is expected to be approved by the Japan Patent Office within two months, Mi added.

Zhang Yansen, board chairperson with the Goubuli Group, told the newspaper that the meaning of the English name "fits very well with tenet of the group."

"Honesty is the thing we've been insisting on in our hundreds of years of history," Zhang said.

Tianjin is famous in China for its abundant traditional dim sums, among which the Goubuli bun is the most popular.

The company's bizarre Chinese name was the founder's nickname.

In 1858, Goubuli's founder, a Hebei Province native named Gouzai, opened his own bun booth in Tianjin after working for years as a trainee at a local dim sum booth.

Gouzai's bun was unique in both its out appearance and taste, which attracted villagers from very far away.
