altCommuters soon will be able to surf the Internet at speeds 20 to 50 times faster on mobile devices along two bus routes that pass through downtown areas like People's Square and Huaihai Road.

A test of long-awaited 4G services will allow those taking No. 49 and No. 926 buses to surf faster than the current 3G service using smart phones and iPad with Wi-Fi features.

China Mobile, which has begun large-scale 4G trials in Shanghai, will test the in-bus 4G services.

"It takes time for us to test for stability of the signal in a moving bus," said a Shanghai Mobile official.

At present, Internet services are also available in some local buses via 3G technology, provided by Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Telecom.

With the coming 4G services, passengers can enjoy more data-rich services on the bus like watching videos and listening to online music.

Starting this month, Shanghai Mobile has invited 5,000 users to test the latest 4G products including mobile phones and data cards based on the domestic TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution).

Shanghai Mobile has built 1,000 base stations - 700 outdoors and 300 indoors - to cover the areas within the Inner Ring Road.

It will cover the whole city by the end of this year, Xu Da, Shanghai Mobile's general manager, said.
