altChina's e-commerce giant Alibaba Group has implemented tougher measures starting against fake goods sold on its shopping site taobao.com, China's largest consumer-to-consumer retailer.

Taobao has reached an agreement with the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition, members of which will help identify the pirated goods sold at Taobao, the online retailer said.

On August 4, it announced a set of new rules to fight against fake products on its website.

According to the new rules, the punishment for the offending vendors ranges from banning sale of new goods for 21 days to outright closure of the store.

Alibaba's Taobao was included in the US Notorious Markets lists by the Office of the United States Trade Representative in 2011, for widespread sales of counterfeit and pirated goods on its website by different vendors.

For this reason, the e-commerce group has undertaken efforts trying to clean up its website.

However, counterfeits are rampant and persistent, posing a challenge for Alibaba's IPO in the future.
