Beijing/Tianjin/Singapore 29 October 2009 As part of its strategic vision and plans to develop a model eco-city by drawing on solutions and ideas from world-class eco-tech solution providers, Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment & Development Co., Ltd. (SSTEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Philips today to explore collaboration in test-bedding and application of energy efficient lighting and consumer lifestyle products and solutions in its developments.

SSTEC and Philips will explore joint programmes on energy efficiency to promote the use of energy efficient products and solutions in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City. Working with Philips as a strategic partner, SSTEC aims to develop eco-homes that meet the needs of an urbanising China. In addition, Philips is considering other investments in the Tianjin Eco-City to support this collaboration.

With various key performance indicators ranging from renewable energy, waste management to green buildings, etc., the Tianjin Eco-City is a natural adoption ground for eco-technologies and solutions. Given China’s fast growing economy and rapid urbanization trend, green building plays an increasing vital role in addressing the environmental needs of today. As the leader in the industry, Philips has been actively promoting the switch to energy-efficient lighting solutions. This is in line with the Chinese government’s drive to reduce energy consumption and cut carbon emission. In addition, by using the latest lighting technologies to make large urban spaces brighter and safer, Philips is actively promoting the concept of ‘sustainable cities’ in China for ongoing city master planning and use of intelligent urban lighting solutions. Next to this, Philips has a green product portfolio of Consumer Lifestyle products and solutions that will meet the needs of the eco-homes.

Patrick Kung, Executive Vice President and CEO of Philips Greater China, said: “As a health and well-being company, we have once again demonstrated that sustainability is our business opportunity, creating value for our company, improving the quality of people’s lives and contributing to a better environment. Our commitment to energy efficient innovations and environmental stewardship will be a key characteristic of our sustainable development over the coming years in China. ”

Goh Chye Boon, CEO of SSTEC said, “Improving energy efficiency is integral to green and sustainable buildings. We are happy to partner Philips in the areas of energy efficient lighting and consumer lifestyle solutions. As a household name in China, we are confident that Philips can value-add to our developments by bringing on board consumer-friendly solutions and know-how in energy efficiency. Tianjin Eco-City can value-add as a base for eco-companies such as Philips to provide eco-solutions to Tianjin, Tianjin Binhai New Area and Northern China.”
