NEW DELHI — General Motors and China?s SAIC Motor Corp. are set to announce a tie-up on Friday for the sale of vehicles in India, a report said.
GM and SAIC, which have a joint venture in China, are expected to announce plans to bring some of the Chinese producer?s light commercial vehicles to India, including minivans and mini-trucks, the Financial Times said.
The Indian commercial vehicle market is dominated by Tata Motors, while Maruti Suzuki is the biggest seller of passenger cars.
The move by SAIC, which stands for Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., would be a significant step by a Chinese vehicle manufacturer to capture a share of India's fast-growing market.
Lately GM has been making major efforts to increase sales in India and plans to launch a small car.
Karl Slym, the president of General Motors India, said early last month that the companies were in talks about bringing light commercial vehicles and passenger cars to India.
