altTianjin TV started 2014 with two new entertainment series; My Schoolfellow is a Star and New Opera Show. Both attracted wide attention, especially the latter.

New Opera Show, which debuted on January 25, is an original celebrity singing competition with an opera twist. Celebrities without an opera background train and perform – the twist is that they have to sing a pop song in opera style. The show reinvigorated Chinese culture and made opera trendy among youngsters. Its average rating in the first quarter was 0.87.

Tianjin TV has been exploring relationship-based show for years. On May 7, it took a step forward in this genre by releasing reality show Chinese Marriage Proposal, which focuses on families and marriage. The male participant has to stay at his parents-in-law’s home for two days, complete certain tasks and make a proposal. His girlfriend watches his performance, considers their relationship and decides whether to say yes or no. It’s a reflection of the real challenges found in Chinese-style marriages.

Also, Tianjin is preparing new-born baby reality show Hello Baby, which focuses on one expectant mother and records all aspects of her pregnancy up to the birth.

In related news, Shenzhen TV launched observational reality show Come On Baby, which shows a live birth, just ahead of Mother’s Day. Both the genre and its presentation created a buzz online. Most praised the show’s theme of maternal love, but some argued that it was too bloody and scary for mothers-to-be and those who hadn’t been through pregnancy.

More recently, reality show Mystery Locations, launched on May 12, follows celebrities as they explore the 10 most mysterious places in China. The first episode sees three stars visit the Shennongjia Forest region.

Another reality show set to be aired is Chinese Football Dream, which features a ‘dream team’ of seven celebrities’ children that undergoes training before taking on a team of professional footballers’ children. Chun Du will act as the team’s leader.

Perfect Substitute is a celebrity life-swap reality show. Ordinary people who resemble celebrities have a chance to experience those celebs’ lives. With the help of personal guidance from the celebs, participants replace them to attend a big event.

Coproduced by Tianjin TV and 3C Media, the show is expected to be a hit.
