The national consumer price index (CPI) increased 1.5 percent year to year in April and declined 0.2 percent quarter to quarter, announced the National Bureau of Statistics on 9 May.

The national CPI grew 1.3 percent from January to April. In April, the food price grew 2.7 percent over the past year, consisting of 0.91 percent of total price growth. Prices of meat, vegetables, and grains increased 5.0, 7.2, and 2.7 percent respectively, responsible for 0.35, 0.23, and 0.08 percent of overall CPI growth.

As summer began, more fresh fruits and vegetables reached the market. Supplies of eggs, seafood, and pork remain high. The CPI from fresh vegetables and meat contributed to 0.3 percent of CPI decline, more than the total quarter to quarter CPI decline.

As the weather getting warm, local vegetables are now abundant in Tianjin and their prices have generally declined. After the three-day Labour Day holiday from 1-3 May, the price of vegetables, fruits, and seafood dropped continuously with rate varies from 4.5 percent to 35 percent.

After the holiday, the price of Chinese cabbage, cabbage, lettuce, and spinach declined nearly 50 percent. The price of baby cabbage, leek, and celery declined around 20 percent. The price of tomato, zucchini, and eggplant declined more than 15 percent. The price of green onion and cucumber stayed steady. The price of very few vegetables including cauliflower grew.

The prices of fruit dropped from 10 percent to 33 percent after the holiday.
