The PLA Military Transportation University, located in North China's city of Tianjin has been doing research on self-driving technology since 2004.
The research team has completed a series of experiments including self-driving vehicles' performance on highways and general streets. The vehicles' stability, intelligence, and safety have been gradually improved.
Moreover, the performance of these self-driving vehicles is getting more and more similar to manual vehicles. These self-driving vehicles won China's Smart Vehicle Challenge in 2012 and 2014.
A self-driving vehicle is a kind of smart vehicle which relies on in-vehicle sensors and smart autopilot to operate. Developing a self-driving vehicle costs around two million yuan ($326,600).
