China will consolidate the electronic toll collection (ETC) system in 14 provinces and municipalities on Dec 21, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Â
Vehicles equipped with an ETC sensor will ease their way in and out of highway toll stations without stopping in the cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shanxi, Liaoning, Shandong, Shaanxi and Hunan.
Â
The tolls will be automatically levied by the system, which is said to be five times more efficient than manual collection.
Â
There are 247 toll stations in Fujian, and 95 percent of them have had this sytem installed. In Fuzhou, capital city of the province, 33 of its 34 toll stations are ETC-ready, official figures show.Â
