alt The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City is featured in Discovery Channel's three-part series, "How China Works", which aired in China and worldwide on 28 March 2015.

Entitled "Urbanization", the first episode centred on China's rapid urbanization and technological innovations. The Eco-City was cited as an example of China's efforts to address challenges arising from urbanization.

The program highlighted the ecologically friendly aspects of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, including green homes, renewable energy, waste water treatment and an intelligent centralized urban monitoring system.

Host Danny Forster explained that the Eco-City is built of several eco-cells of roughly 400 by 400 meters. Eco-cells are designed such that most of the residents' daily needs can be met within walking distance.

In the program, Forster said, "This Eco-City, as sceptical as I was, is actually the beginning of an alternative. The housing is here, but it is sustainable housing. They are also trying to limit the use of cars, increase public transportation, and create a mix-use environment and intergenerational housing."

Forster added, "All these ideas are nowhere to be seen in cities like Beijing. The idea is that those cities are working, they are dense, they are intense but the quality of life is coming down. Chinese folks want an alternative. Will this work? I don't know. But for sure, this is the first time anywhere in China where I am seeing these ideas in practice."
