Wood Finishes

BT 201711 ARCHITITURE 05Man has always had a close link with nature and our need for connection is still apparent today in many ways. One of these is the comforting psychological reaction we have when we see and use wooden structures. From houses that are built entirely of wood to ones which have interior or exterior wooden finishes, the effects - such as a sense of peace and tranquility - are easily perceptible as also being one of the reasons why so many people choose this material for finishing their home: inside and out!

BT 201711 ARCHITITURE 03But the motives for using wooden finishes are even more complex: wood is a renewable resource and actually carbon negative because it consumes CO2 when growing. Also, it is an economical material, as wooden structures and finishes can lead to reduced construction costs. It has a high aesthetic value and can be used in scores of different colors, textures and shapes. Technology today can be easily employed to solve all the drawbacks of wood, like lesser rigidity than other materials, sensitivity to water, fire or decay. Solutions range in aspect from traditional looks to contemporary ones, from natural to creative.

Wood is a versatile material and it can be employed in a wide array of contexts. Starting with wood finishes which reflect a traditional look, we have to mention the many thousands of years in which wood was used for architecture in different parts of the world, all of which led to the exquisite refinement of its aesthetics, solutions and details. Not just Chinese traditional architecture, but also Scandinavian, Japanese or vernacular architecture, have all provided a series of different styles for the use of wood which are used even today as inspiration for a modern yet tradition-infused aesthetic. We can see this solution being employed a lot for country houses and summer or winter retreats worldwide, where the goal was to harmonize the building with its natural surroundings.

BT 201711 ARCHITITURE 07 2For those with more contemporary taste, a minimalistic or technologically directed modern façade solution using wood will create a contemporary home in the middle of nature, especially when wood is used in combination with glass surfaces, state of the art technical details and in harmony with the landscape. This shows a way of bringing contemporary comfort and lifestyle into nature while still responding to it and having a close link with its surroundings.

In the urban scene, wood is still widely and beautifully used for finishes, giving a personal and warm touch to any structure. In some areas or situations, even if a different structure is preferred, finishing the building with a wooden façade will potentially have lots of benefits. And the solutions are up-to-date to all requirements of modern era buildings: for example, a lot of times the plane of the wood finish is set at a distance from the exterior structural walls of the building to create free space for air ventilation. You can use it to define the whole envelope of the building – for a coherent uniform look – or mark a special part or volume with wood. In this case the wood finish contrasts and complements other materials of the façade, thus creating an interesting modern composition.

Fine-tuning your design, you can discover the different essences of wood with unique textures and colors, ranging from cherry red, to mahogany dark brown or light colored myrtle burl or oak. Wood can be left rough textured or can be finished smoothly.

BT 201711 ARCHITITURE 07When employed on a façade, there are a variety of ways you can do this in order to get different effects based on your taste, needs and budget. Generally the most economical finishing type is to use planks of wood, disposed horizontally – to emphasize the horizontal dimension – or vertically, emphasizing the height of the building. These wood tiles are fixed with metal pieces to structural walls or have a separate substructure designed for the façade. There are examples of museums or other more complex programs which even used curved wood, in this case being able to even generate a free form façade.

BT 201711 ARCHITITURE 02Also very popular seem to be the uses of wood for interior finishes. Wooden decks or parquet flooring are literally everywhere, being much appreciated for their warm nature and comfort and easy way of mounting. But more and more, we can find wooden partition walls, ceilings or vertical finishes inside different architectural programs, like libraries, coffee shops and even special parts of residential homes. A contemporary example of this could be a wooden partition wall which also acts as furniture, designed in a creative modern way: with niches for sitting, storage space and display spaces. Or a small Scandinavian style sauna inside your bathroom. Or the impressive entrance to a contemporary Opera.

Being so warm, calming and comfortable, we find wood finishes more and more on the interior and exterior of our living and working spaces, as solutions and possible creative ideas become increasingly accessible, economical, unique and attractive. So embrace wood and try out a solution on your new interior or exterior design!
