Ascott China participated in the Earth Hour on 27th March, 2010. Its 19 serviced residence properties took part in 11 cities all over China. Ascott China took consecutive initiatives into the event since 2009. Mr Lim Ming Yan, Chief Executive Officer of the Ascott Limited, was elected one of the Earth Hour CEO Campaigners this year to promote the event among business enterprises. As part of CapitaLand's 10th anniversary, more than 180 CapitaLand properties globally, including Ascott China serviced residences, kept the façade lights off for 10 hours from 2030 hrs on 27th March to 0630 hrs on 28th March. Some properties held events for the residents to invite them into the Earth Hour.
For the weeks of March, special trailer had been broadcast in the residence TV channels and event invitations had been distributed to the apartment units in all Ascott China properties to promote the Earth Hour among the residents. A special designed card with an image of the Earth planet on each apartment door handle was applied to bring the residents into an Earth Hour atmosphere. Somerset Olympic Tower and Somerset Youyi in Tianjin organized “Movie Night” for residents as part of the Earth Hour event.
"Ascott China has been focusing on environmental issues as one of our social responsibilities as a corporate," said Mr Goh Soon Keat, Vice President of Corporate Services and Asset Management, Ascott China. “Ascott China will be joining in the Earth Hour for every following year. We hope to invite our residents together into this initiative. Environmental protection should be about everyone.”
CapitaLand China subsidiaries just like Ascott China have been supporting the initiative. Back in 2009, 54 properties of CapitaLand China in 26 cities participated in the event. Altogether 4574.008 KW/h electricity was saved. CapitaLand China was awarded one of the “Best 10 Practice Companies” by World Wild Fund in China.
