More than 20 cities and provinces across China are subsidizing low-income families so they can pay for food and housing in the face of rising inflation.
China created a mechanism in 2011 to offer temporary subsidies to the needy when the consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, and food prices hit certain thresholds. Each provincial-level region sets its own threshold as living costs vary across the vast country.
