The series of colored images were released at a launch event on the occasion of the 2023 Space Day of China held in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province.

Processed in accordance with mapping standards with a spatial resolution of 76 meters, the three images comprise orthophotographs of the western and eastern hemispheres, the Robinson projection and the Mercator projection plus Azimuthal equidistant projection.

"From this colored image with the highest resolution, we can know about the most basic and typical features of the landforms and terrain on Mars. One of the most typical landforms is Olympus Mons, with a diameter of around 600 kilometers. It’s the biggest volcano in the solar system,” said Li Chunlai, deputy chief designer of China’s first Mars exploration program.

According to the CNSA, the images are based on 14,757 image data acquired by a remote-sensing camera on the Tianwen-1 orbiter over eight months from November 2021 to July 2022.

Through the study of images and data from Tianwen 1, Chinese scientists have spotted and identified many geological bodies surrounding the landing site of the Tianwen 1 and have named 22 of them after Chinese villages with renowned historical and cultural heritages. Tianjin Yangliuqing Ancient Town is on the list.
