A man in Beijing has been apprehended by police after he forcefully drove into a middle school campus in Beijing’s Haidian district and held a student hostage at around 7 am on Monday morning, police said. The student was later safely released.
The man, 26-year-old surnamed Yuan, who had previously worked at the school, took one student hostage and injured another student during the process. Police arrived at scene immediately and apprehended the man. The student was safely released while the injured student was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition, according to police release.
The case is being investigated by police, with the man's motivation yet unknown.
In May, the Ministry of Education held a video conference addressing campus safety. During the meeting, Huai Jinpeng, education minister vowed to enhance safety inside the campus, and strengthen the security of the nation's schools.
